Pai Country Hut is a guest house of standalone cottages set in a tropical garden on the edge of Pai, about 50 metres from the Pai River. The lively Walking Street is only around 100 metres away, a short stroll over a bamboo bridge, so the town's cafés, bars and evening market are close at hand, while the cottages look out over the garden towards the mountains.
The cottages are built in a traditional style from natural materials with thatched roofs and traditional wooden furnishings. There are three types: a bamboo cottage with air conditioning, a bamboo cottage cooled by a fan, and a larger Deluxe Cottage with air conditioning. Each one has a private bathroom, a balcony and terrace, and a flat-screen TV with streaming services.
Mornings start with an American buffet breakfast, and the garden and terrace are made for slow afternoons. Wi-Fi is free throughout, private parking on site costs nothing, and the tour desk can help arrange day trips and tickets.
Pai Country Hut has three cottage types, each a standalone unit on the ground floor with a private bathroom, a balcony, a terrace and a patio overlooking the garden and the inner courtyard. Every cottage has a flat-screen TV with streaming, cable and satellite channels, a refrigerator, an electric kettle, a desk and a small dining area, and towels, free toiletries and a hairdryer are provided.
The difference lies in size and cooling. The two bamboo cottages measure 22 m² and have a king-size bed and a mosquito net: one with air conditioning, the other with a fan only. The Deluxe Cottage is larger at 28 m², with a super-king-size bed and air conditioning.
Life at Pai Country Hut is simple and centred on the garden. The cottages are spread around a green space with a terrace, patios and an outdoor dining area, and an American buffet breakfast is served in the mornings. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and private parking on site is free, with no need to reserve; valet parking is available too.
The tour desk can help arrange day trips and tickets, and a free shuttle is offered from Pai Airport. The staff speak English and Thai, the common areas are covered by CCTV, and every cottage is on the ground floor.
Pai Country Hut sits on the edge of Pai, about 50 metres from the Pai River and around 100 metres from Walking Street, which you reach on foot over a bamboo bridge. Pai, in Mae Hong Son Province, was once a Shan market village.
Most travellers come by road from Chiang Mai, about 130 km away on Route 1095. Minivans leave Chiang Mai Bus Terminal 2 (Arcade) roughly every hour from early morning to late afternoon and take three to three and a half hours. The road is known for its 762 curves: if you get carsick, take medication beforehand, ask for a front seat and keep breakfast light. Pai's bus station is about 300 metres from the guest house, a four-minute walk. The town's airstrip has had no scheduled flights for several years, although the guest house offers a free shuttle from Pai Airport. Share your arrival time at least seven days ahead; check-in runs from 14:00 to 21:00.
Walking Street comes alive every evening, from around 5 pm to 10 pm. Pai Canyon, 7 km away, is the classic sunset spot: its narrow red-earth ridges get crowded, so arrive by about 4:30 pm and wear shoes with good grip. The White Buddha of Wat Phra That Mae Yen looks down on the town from a hill, at the top of around 350 steps. South of town, Tha Pai Hot Springs lies about 8 km away and the Memorial Bridge crosses the Pai River around 9 km away by road, while Pam Bok Waterfall hides in a narrow gorge about 10 km away. A scooter is the easiest way to get around, as ride-hailing is limited. The cool season from November to February brings clear skies and is the best time to visit; March and April can be hazy, and June to October is the rainy season.
